  22.  DCI will be on PBS as a highlights version that will be released in 
  23. October or November to PBS stations (whether or not local stations pick this 
  24. up is another thing).  You may want to call your local PBS station in
  25. August to remind them to broadcast the performance.  The broadcast is
  26. called "The Summer Music Games".
  27.  
  28.  To see the LIVE, FULL FOUR HOUR broadcast, you need to find a 
  29. satellite hookup (Pay-Per-View) site.  Tickets are whatever the sponsor 
  30. decides to charge.  Last year, many are around $15 and include some sort 
  31. of beverage/food deal.  DCI will announce the closed circuit sites later 
  32. in the year and they wil be included here.

  1906.  In September of 1963, five men, Henry "Lefty" Mayer (NY 
  1907. Skyliners), George Bull (Yankee-Rebels), Randy Roy (Reading 
  1908. Buccaneers), Pete Burns (Conn. Hurricanes), and Carmen Cirlincione 
  1909. (Archer-Epler Musketeers), met in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania to 
  1910. discuss the possibilities of creating an organization dedicated to promoting 
  1911. senior drum and bugle corps.  This was the start of the Drum Corps 
  1912. Associates a.k.a DCA and it continued the legacy created by the V.F.W. 
  1913. which discontinued its senior championship after 1962.  The first corps 
  1914. to become charter members were the Buccaneers, Hurricanes, 
  1915. Interstatesmen, Musketeers, Rockets, Skyliners, and Yankee-Rebels. Two 
  1916. years later, the first DCA championship was help at Milford, Connecticut. 
  1917. Six of the seven charter corps competed on September 11, 1965, the 
  1918. Reading Buccaneers won.  Today, 30 years later, the DCA still thrives.  
  1919. Many corps have had the honor of being DCA Champions.

  2124.  7.2.1  Ballad of the Unsung Heros
  2125.  
  2126.  Parade corps are almost always senior by nature.  As the class 
  2127. name implies, these corps march in parades or perform at "standstills."  
  2128. Although many drum corps nuts do not consider these units as part of the 
  2129. continuum, they do provide an alternative for people who want to be part 
  2130. of drum corps, but cannot afford the time the field (DCA) units demand.  
  2131. Parade corps generally practice 3 hours a week.  The atmosphere is not 
  2132. stressful and of all the types of corps, it is the most family oriented.  
  2133. Most parade corps will not travel more than 2 hours from their HQ so it 
  2134. is easy to pack up the family and drag them to the various parades.  Many 
  2135. of the DCA corps started as parade corps, it is a great way to start a corps' 
  2136. economy.

  2273.  It should be pointed out that senior corps are comprised of people 
  2274. who are, for the most part, not young anymore.  They are people who have 
  2275. careers under way, families in the making, houses needing painting, and 
  2276. all the other wonderous (more like ponderous) things that happen on the 
  2277. threshold of "mid-life."  This reduces the amount of time that senior 
  2278. corps have to operate.  Serior corps members are the epitome of the 
  2279. weekend warrior and the weekend starts 8:00 pm Friday and ends 
  2280. somewhere near 8:00 pm the following Sunday.  There are a few breaks so 
  2281. the members can abuse BEER!!!  Norm Peterson ("Cheers") is a feather 
  2282. weight compared to any one of the Hawthorne Caballero's Contra players.
  2283.  The senior season runs from mid April (first of the senior 
  2284. versions of camps) to Labor Day weekend (the ever lovin' Championship 
  2285. weekend).
